How Much Data Do You Need in the UK?
The UK has free WiFi in most hotels, cafes, and train stations. But relying on WiFi alone is impractical — you'll want mobile data for:
- Google Maps / Apple Maps — navigating London's complex Tube network and unfamiliar cities (~100MB/day)
- Uber / Bolt — ride-hailing when the Tube doesn't go where you need (~30MB/day)
- Google Translate — less essential than in non-English countries, but useful for Scottish dialect signs and Welsh language areas (~20MB/day)
- Social media — sharing photos of Big Ben, Edinburgh Castle, and the Lake District (~200-500MB/day)
- Restaurant search — Google Maps reviews and booking apps like TheFork and OpenTable (~50MB/day)
Our recommendation: - 3-4 day London trip: 3GB — $5.18 - Week-long trip (London + Edinburgh): 5GB — $6.96 - 2-week trip (multiple cities): 10GB — $10.01 - Extended stay or heavy use: 20GB — $14.89

UK-Specific Tips
The Tube has mobile coverage now
London's Underground now has 4G and 5G coverage in stations and increasingly in tunnels. You can check Google Maps for route updates mid-journey — a huge improvement over the old days of going underground and losing signal entirely.
Oyster and contactless are separate from eSIM
Don't confuse your eSIM with payment. Your eSIM provides data only. For the Tube and buses, use a contactless bank card or Apple/Google Pay directly at the gates — no need to buy an Oyster card if your bank supports contactless.
The UK uses GBP, not EUR
Since the UK left the EU, it uses British Pounds. Having data means you can use Google Pay and Apple Pay at most shops, check live exchange rates, and find ATMs with good rates. Many smaller shops in the UK are still cash-preferred, so having an ATM locator is handy.
The UK needs its own plan — EU eSIMs won't work
Because the UK left the EU, a European eSIM plan will not cover the UK. Make sure you buy a UK-specific eSIM. Similarly, if you're also visiting France or Germany, you'll need a separate EU plan for those countries.
Download offline maps for the Scottish Highlands
Coverage in the Scottish Highlands and remote parts of Wales and the Lake District can be spotty. Download offline maps before heading to rural areas, especially if you're driving or hiking.
